”In order to discover the character of people, we have only to observe what they love.” – Saint Augustine of Hippo
Love is surrender, and that’s the hardest part.
I am frazzled, disconcerted, tired. We are carrying a heavy load and when we set to put it down, another weight is added on top. Another shooting, another atrocity, another another another. Blame it on mental health. They’ll take away our weapons. News flashes constantly and strobes blindingly. We are sightless, yet throw the first stone. We still move to hurt each other. Are we as humans violent and savage by nature, if we give in to evil? There HAS to be another way.
Augustinian principle teaches that in order for good to exist, there also must be evil. Are you (the proverbial you) my enemy? What wrongs have i done? Why do I feel so ashamed?
Working through these negative thoughts I’ve shifted my core beliefs from self doubt and judgment to patience, self-compassion, and kindness. I am a work in progress. We have the capacity for both. If evil is to give in to selfish desires, unthinkable atrocities , hatred, self loathing, and false beliefs, then love is then antithesis. Love is surrender. And that’s the hardest part of self compassion. What do you need to surrender? Let your love be strong, your joy be overflowing, and your hope be audaciously loud.
